Formation

Introduction: Formation in our province is a cornerstone of our mission, dedicated to developing individuals who are spiritually grounded, theologically educated, and prepared for leadership roles within our community and beyond.

Our Formation programs are designed to nurture individuals in their spiritual journey, fostering a contemplative attitude towards the mystery of the Incarnation and intimacy with Christ. Through various events and experiences, participants may encounter the Lord’s goodness and saving presence. Rooted in our Bethlemite charism, spirituality, and mission, these programs aim to promote growth, wisdom, and a deeper connection with God.

In the Institute, we distinguish between initial formation and permanent formation. Initial formation includes the stages of Aspirancy, Postulancy, Novitiate, and Juniorate. The primary goal of initial formation is to provide young sisters with an experience of God that leads them to a decision of faith and a radical commitment to following the Lord. Those aspiring to embrace our consecrated life must progressively take up their religious commitment in community life, in accordance with the charism, spirituality, and traditions of the Institute.

In all stages of formation, an environment of joy, friendship, silence, prayer, study, and apostolic work is fostered to allow for a gradual understanding of the characteristics of our spirituality.

Aspirancy: Initial exploration of vocation

Aspirancy is the initial stage of discernment, where individuals explore the possibility of a religious vocation and begin to understand the nature of religious life. Through learning, spiritual exploration and community engagement, aspirants begin their journey towards a deeper commitment. It typically lasts from 6 months to one year.

Postulancy: Preparing for a deeper commitment

The Postulancy is the initial stage of formal admission into the religious community. During this time, a young woman begin to integrate more fully into the life and mission of the Congregation preparing for the next stage of formation. Through education, practical experience and personal development, Postulants are guided towards a deeper commitment to their vocation. The postulancy ordinarily lasts for one year; in special cases, it may be extended to a minimum of six months and a maximum of two years.

Novitiate: A time of initial formation and reflection

The Novitiate is a period of initial formation, where candidates explore their vocation and the demands of religious life. Life in the Institute begins with the novitiate. This stage is characterized by a deeper immersion in the spiritual and communal aspects of the vocation. The Novitiate is a formative time of learning and discernment, where candidates are introduced to the core elements of religious life. Through study, prayer, and community living, individuals begin to discern their commitment to a life of service and devotion.

The basic objective of this stage of formation is to deepen the Baptismal commitment and specifically respond to God’s call to religious life within the Institute’s charism and spirituality. During the two year period of the Novitiate, the novice gains understanding and experience of living in a community, the practice of vows, the Constitution of the Congregation and the Documents of the Church.  Having recognized the importance of integrating prayer and work, she prepares herself adequately to pronounce her vows at a public ceremony as a member of the Bethlemite Sisters.

Juniorate: Deepening commitment and Formation

The Juniorate is a crucial stage in the formation process, focusing on deepening the commitment of those who have already begun their journey towards religious life. It typically lasts for a period of 6 to 9 years. The Juniorate program is designed to refine and strengthen the commitment of individuals as they continue their journey towards our life. They are encouraged to be faithful to prayer, reflection, study, community living and apostolic work before taking final vows. The example and support of the sisters in the community enable them to grow as mature religious and to make a definitive response to their call.

The junior Mistress accompanies them and guides them to grow as mature persons in all aspects of their life. They are to be open and accountable to the local superior and the junior mistress for spiritual guidance and support.

Intensive Period of Preparation

The time of immediate preparation for final commitment is known as the Intensive Period of Preparation. Having learned and lived the basic tenets of religious life in our Congregation, and having experienced essential virtues such as surrender, authenticity, and freedom, the young sister examines her personal qualities. She assesses herself on traits like attentiveness, insightfulness, fairness, responsibility, and love. She strengthens her resolve to live out the charism, spirituality and mission of the Congregation, and commits to adapting to all circumstances and vicissitudes of life. She reaffirms her dedication to following Jesus in chastity, poverty, and obedience and professes these vows as an external sign of her lifelong inner commitment.

Ongoing Formation

Ongoing formation is a means of rejuvenation for all perpetually professed Sisters of the Bethlemite Congregation, allowing them to renew themselves spiritually and professionally. We organize various programs within the Province, including: • Profession Group-wise Renewal and Retreat • Renewal and Retreat for Silver/Golden Jubilee Groups • Renewal and Retreat by Age Group: Seminars, workshops, and conferences both within and outside the country on relevant topics for personal and professional enrichment.
